Wednesday general audiences resume, exceptionally held indoors due to the heat
📍 St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City
After the summer break spent at Castel Gandolfo, Pope Leo XIV resumes the Wednesday general audiences, exceptionally held inside St. Peter's Basilica rather than in the square, to protect the faithful and pilgrims from the extremely high temperatures of these days. The Pope entered on foot, walking the entire central nave, shaking hands and receiving gifts from those present, greeted by long, warm applause on arrival under Bernini's baldachin. The catechesis, dedicated to Sacrosanctum Concilium, focused on the Liturgy of the Hours: the Pope recalled that it "asks to be increasingly welcomed and lived in the ordinary life of the baptized" and can offer "the path and school of Christian prayer" to those who wish to learn to pray, describing every Hour as "an act of hope" as we await the Lord's return. He also noted that prayer is not "a form of escapism" nor "a technique aimed at well-being," and invited French-speaking faithful to use the summer to spend more time with the Lord in prayer. Greeting pilgrims, including Polish groups walking to Jasna Góra, he assured: "Together with you I pray for peace in the world and for new priestly and religious vocations." It is the Pontiff's first major public appointment since returning to the Vatican on July 27, before departing again on August 13 for the mid-August (Ferragosto) period at Castel Gandolfo.

🕊️ Condolence telegram
Condolence telegram for the death of Cardinal Júlio Duarte Langa
📍 Xai-Xai, Mozambique
Pope Leo XIV sent a telegram of condolences to the Apostolic Administrator of Xai-Xai, Archbishop Francisco Chimoio, for the death of Cardinal Júlio Duarte Langa, bishop emeritus of the Mozambican diocese, who died on Monday 3 August at the age of 98. In the message the Pope expresses "spiritual union" and condolences to the episcopate of Mozambique and to the family of the deceased, recalling how the Cardinal taught "the art of closeness in the pastoral care of souls", giving himself with "simplicity, zeal and perseverance" to the flock entrusted to him during his twenty-eight years as bishop, marked by the country's long civil war, and his commitment to proclaiming the "Gospel of peace and reconciliation" among all Mozambicans. The Pontiff finally grants a "comforting apostolic blessing" to those attending the funeral rites. Created cardinal by Pope Francis in 2015, Duarte Langa was the second Mozambican cardinal in history.

The "circle of heroes": Kids Kicking Cancer's Martial Arts Therapists meet the Pope
📍 St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City
Alongside the general audience, about twenty Italian Martial Arts Therapists from the international association Kids Kicking Cancer, led by president Giancarlo Bagnulo, presented Pope Leo XIV with the "Circle of Heroes," an imaginary place where children with cancer and serious chronic illnesses learn to manage pain, suffering and fear through the philosophy and breathing techniques of the martial arts. The group gave the Pontiff a black belt embroidered with "Leo XIV," a scroll listing the pediatric oncology wards of the sixteen Italian hospitals involved — including Bambino Gesù and Gemelli in Rome — and about thirty letters written by the young patients. At the end of the audience the Pope also greeted a large group of children and disabled young people from Ukraine, guests of the House of Mercy in Buchach on holiday in Nocera Superiore, the friends of Dea Mastronardi (active in youth-distress prevention), and the Maltese altar servers on summer duty in St. Peter's Basilica, a tradition renewed since 1965.
