Recitation of the Angelus
📍 St. Peter's Square, Vatican City
As is customary on Sundays, on the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Pope Leo XIV recited the Angelus at noon from the window of the Apostolic Palace study overlooking St. Peter's Square. Commenting on the Gospel of Matthew about Jesus walking on the water during the storm on the Sea of Galilee, the Pontiff recalled that after the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves the disciples found themselves afraid before the waves: the Lord's presence, he explained, changes everything and teaches us neither to grow proud in success nor to despair in difficulties, even in moments of darkness, because Jesus never abandons us. After the Marian prayer the Pope made two appeals: for Sudan, expressing closeness over the tragic situation in El Obeid and asking the authorities to guarantee humanitarian corridors and an immediate ceasefire; and for Ukraine, deploring the attacks on the civilian population, recalling that "war only generates more war" and calling for room to be given to diplomacy and dialogue in respect of humanitarian law. He finally greeted the pilgrims present in the square, in particular young people from the Diocese of Milan, scouts from Enna and young people from Padua, inviting them to get to know the saints celebrated these days: St. Dominic, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, St. Lawrence and St. Clare of Assisi.
