Pope Leo XIV sent a telegram of condolences, signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, to H.E. Archbishop Francisco Javier Múnera Correa of Cartagena, president of the Colombian Episcopal Conference, for the victims of the powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck the Chocó department of Colombia on August 10, killing more than 130 people and injuring hundreds. The Pontiff assured prayers for the dead, spiritual closeness to the injured and to the families of the deceased, and gratitude to those engaged in rescue efforts, invoking upon all of Colombia the gifts of spiritual strength and Christian hope through the intercession of the Virgin Mary.
Pope Leo XIV announces the renewal of the Council for the Economy, the body that oversees the economic and administrative activities of the Holy See according to criteria of transparency and efficiency. Cardinal Reinhard Marx is confirmed as coordinator, Charlotte Kreuter-Kirchhof as vice-coordinator, and Msgr. Brian Edwin Ferme as secretary. New ecclesiastical members include Cardinals Grzegorz Ryś (Archbishop of Kraków), Ladislav Nemet (Archbishop of Belgrade), Jean-Paul Vesco (Archbishop of Algiers), and Roberto Repole (Archbishop of Turin). The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development announces the theme chosen by Pope Leo XIV for the Message on the occasion of the 60th World Day of Peace, to be celebrated on January 1, 2027: "Disarming technology, serving peace. Politics as preventive responsibility." The Pontiff recalls the moral responsibility of those active in the political sphere and exhorts all humanity to promote human dignity and build peace starting with the disarmament of technology, warning of the risks of entrusting military decisions to artificial intelligence: "There is no algorithm that can make war morally acceptable."
