General audience: the liturgical year, making Christ's salvation present
📍 St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City
On Wednesday, August 12, Pope Leo XIV held the general audience in St. Peter's Basilica, with catechesis dedicated to the conciliar Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium, on the theme of the liturgical year. The Pope recalled that the liturgical year is not "a cold and inert representation of past events," but the constant actualization of Christ's saving work in the life of the Church, with Sunday as its foundation, "the Lord's Day." He stressed that the liturgical assembly "cannot be replaced by a merely virtual presence, nor is it reduced to a merely passive gathering," and urged that the best conditions be sought so that even those who cannot abstain from work on Sundays can take part in Holy Mass. At the end he greeted pilgrims in French (Diocese of Yaoundé, Cameroon), English (Malta, Zimbabwe), German, Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese (Mozambique), Arabic and Polish, as well as Italian faithful, the Brothers of St. Gabriel marking their 25th anniversary of religious profession, young people, the sick and newlyweds.
