Holy Mass for the Solemnity of the Assumption
📍 Pontifical Parish of St. Thomas of Villanova, Castel Gandolfo
Pope Leo XIV presides over Holy Mass at the pontifical parish of St. Thomas of Villanova in Castel Gandolfo, on the occasion of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Before the celebration, the Pope spent a long time greeting the faithful gathered along the barriers in Piazza della Libertà, shaking hands, blessing people and collecting letters. In the homily, recalling Pius XII's teaching (1950) that "Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed into heavenly glory in body and soul," the Pope contrasted the aesthetic standards of the consumerist world with true spiritual beauty, which does not hide the signs of time but illuminates them with love: "love is man's most beautiful ornament: love that transfigures, transforms, ennobles, lifts up." He pointed to this beauty in the eyes of tired but happy parents, in grandparents devoted to their grandchildren, in young people who choose the good, and proposed Mary as "Mother, guide, travelling companion and protector on the way to Heaven." The Choir of the Gandolfina Music Academy performed, among other pieces, the "Magnificat" and the "Tu es Petrus" by Giuseppe Mele, composed for the Pope.

🙏 Angelus
Recitation of the Angelus
📍 Piazza della Libertà, Castel Gandolfo
At the end of Holy Mass, the Holy Father leads the recitation of the Angelus from Piazza della Libertà, before the faithful gathered for the mid-August (Ferragosto) period at Castel Gandolfo. In his reflection, Leo XIV illustrated two iconographic traditions of the Assumption: the ancient "Dormition," depicting Mary asleep on a bier while the risen Christ receives her soul, and the image, developed in the West, of Mary glorified in heaven, clothed in light. He reaffirmed that "Mary was assumed body and soul, that is, in the integrity of her person," linking the mystery to the Christian hope of bodily resurrection. After the Marian prayer he made appeals for the communities of the Holy Land, for the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, for persecuted Christians worldwide and for the Colombian populations hit by the recent earthquake, concluding with the invocation "Holy Mary, pray for us!"
Published in today's bulletin, a communiqué on resignations and appointments. The Holy Father appointed Titular Archbishop Angelo Accattino as Apostolic Nuncio to Colombia, previously Nuncio to Tanzania. He also appointed Msgr. Gábor Pintér as Apostolic Nuncio to the Kingdom of Tonga, who retains his other roles in New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati and Oceania. In Canada, he accepted the resignation of Msgr. Claude Champagne from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Edmundston, appointing Msgr. Michel Proulx, Bishop of Bathurst, as Apostolic Administrator.

✉️ Message to youth
Message for the III National Youth Day in Mexico
📍 Monterrey, Mexico
Published in today's bulletin, a Message from Pope Leo XIV, written in Spanish, to the organizers and participants of the III National Youth Day, held on August 15-16 in Monterrey. The Pope writes that he wants to "make himself present" among the Mexican youth gathered together with their pastors, to undertake together "this path of faith": a meeting that "arises from communion with Christ, to show the world what our purpose in life is, to unite ourselves with Him and thus, participating in His life, reach the holiness to which we are called." He stresses that "only united to Christ can the world believe in Him," even amid the problems of violence, indifference and lack of meaning. He encourages the youth to live the Day "with youthful joy," entrusting them to the maternal protection of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
