Resumption of the Wednesday general audience
📍 St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City
On Wednesday, August 19, Pope Leo XIV returns to the Vatican to preside over the general audience in St. Peter's Basilica, which resumes on a weekly basis after the break for the mid-August period spent at Castel Gandolfo. In the catechesis cycle on the documents of the Second Vatican Council, the Holy Father comments on the Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium on sacred music, drawing on Colossians 3:16-17: liturgical music, he explains, is "a necessary and integral part of solemn liturgy" and not mere decoration of the celebration, but expresses the affective dimension of prayer and fosters the union of souls, while respecting the musical traditions of different cultures. At the end he greets the faithful in nine languages and, addressing Polish pilgrims, recalls the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism on August 23, invoking the figure of the priest Władysław Findysz, the first Polish beatified martyr of communist persecution. He closes with an appeal for peace, a "precious good" that requires "strong and constant commitment" to achieve.
