Audience with participants in the XVII Annual Meeting of the International Catholic Legislators Network
📍 Clementine Hall, Apostolic Palace
At 10:00 am, in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace, Pope Leo XIV receives in audience the participants in the XVII Annual Meeting of the International Catholic Legislators Network (ICLN), gathered in Rome from August 20 to 23 on the theme "Human Dignity and Artificial Intelligence: Challenges, Opportunities and Control." The Holy Father states that "the world does not need an artificial intelligence that diminishes humanity," but rather "a human intelligence illuminated by wisdom, a political authority guided by conscience, and a technological innovation guided by charity." He recalls that every technological advance poses "not simply what we can do, but what we should do," and invokes the principles of the Church's social doctrine — human dignity, the common good, the universal destination of goods, subsidiarity and solidarity — as criteria for discernment. He warns of the risk that artificial intelligence could become a "vehicle of ideological or economic colonialism" and generate new forms of technological dependency between poorer and richer nations. He urges legislators to "guide innovation wisely" without hindering it, promoting laws that protect human rights, privacy and transparency, and asks that the family, the "first school of humanity," never be eroded by artificial intelligence. Finally, he calls for a "civilization of love" in which technology is "not a rival of humanity, but a servant of the common good."
