Audience with the members of the Latin Episcopal Conference in the Arab Regions (CELRA)
📍 Apostolic Palace, Vatican City
Pope Leo XIV receives in audience the members of the Conference of Latin Bishops in the Arab Regions (CELRA), the body that brings together the pastors of the Latin jurisdictions of Israel and Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus and the countries of the Arabian Peninsula (the Apostolic Vicariates of Northern and Southern Arabia). In his address the Pope recalls the witness of martyrdom known by those Churches — from Sister Leonella Sgorbati to the religious and faithful killed in Iraq, Syria and Yemen — and urges the bishops not to be afraid of their smallness, because "the fruitfulness of the Church is not measured in numbers, structures or resources, but in fidelity to the Gospel." He asks them to be pastors close to their people, to have particular care for families and young people, and to defend the dignity of migrants, who are numerous especially in the Gulf countries, so that the communities may be "homes in which no one feels a stranger." Finally he calls for sincere dialogue with other Christian communities, with Muslims and with the different religious traditions: "where war has sown mistrust, every gesture of esteem, collaboration and respect can become a step toward reconciliation and peace."

Address to the members of the Latin Episcopal Conference in the Arab Regions (CELRA) (translated)

Your Beatitude, Venerable Brothers in the Episcopate, dear friends, with great joy I welcome you, Pastors who together form the Conference of Latin Bishops in the Arab Regions. Your Churches have known the witness of martyrdom: we think of Sister Leonella Sgorbati and of the religious and faithful killed in Iraq, Syria and Yemen.

📋 Daily schedule
On the same morning Pope Leo XIV receives in the Clementine Hall about 150 seminarians and the formators of the "Pius XI" Pontifical Regional Seminary of Apulia in Molfetta and of the Diocesan Seminary of Aversa: the Molfetta students are in Rome for the centenary of the new headquarters ordered by Pius XI, while those of Aversa mark the 300th anniversary of the opening of their college. The Pope points to "learning to be with the Master, Jesus" as the heart of the seminary experience — Jesus "called those he wanted so that they would be with him": study, discipline and the stages of the journey are necessary, but they are worthwhile only if grounded in the relationship with God and in a "supernatural vision" able to recognize the Lord's action in the ordinary circumstances of each day. He then stresses that "the time of the seminary remains necessary, today no less than yesterday": precisely because our age is "fast and noisy," there is a need for a place and a season of life in which to learn to abide, to discern and to let oneself be formed without shortcuts. He recalls that no one is called through their own merit — "there is no competition, there is no ranking" — but only through a free election by God the Father, and that "the Church is lived together; it is the property of none of us." Pointing to the figure of Don Tonino Bello, the former bishop of Molfetta, he urges them to come down from the mountain to be sent to the people of their lands: "families who struggle, young people who pack a suitcase to look for work, lonely elderly people, the marginalized."

The heart of the seminary experience is learning to be with the Master, Jesus, who "called those he wanted so that they would be with him." Study, discipline and the stages of the journey are necessary elements of formation, but they are worthwhile only if founded on the relationship with the One who called you and on a supernatural vision able to recognize God's action in the ordinary circumstances of each day.
