Recitation of the Sunday Angelus
📍 St. Peter's Square, Vatican City
At noon Pope Leo XIV appears at the window of the study of the Apostolic Palace to lead the recitation of the Angelus with the faithful and pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square. Commenting on the Gospel of the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Mt 18:21-35), the Pope devotes his reflection to forgiveness "without measure": recalling Peter's question to Jesus about how many times to forgive a brother, and Jesus' answer "seventy times seven", he stresses that "gift and forgiveness are the foundation of our existence" and that "forgiveness is indispensable, and without it, we cannot live in peace". He cites the example of Saint Peter, forgiven by the risen Jesus on the shore of the lake with the single question "do you love me?", and asks the Virgin Mary to help everyone forgive always, "even when it is difficult to take the first step". At the end of the Marian prayer the Pope recalls that two days earlier marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks in the United States, renews his prayers for the victims and invites everyone to pray for peace in the world. He then greets the pilgrim groups present, including the faithful from São Paulo, Brazil, the Jesus Nazareno Cautivo Religious Association of Rome, the Salesian Oratory of Chieri, Dolianova in Sardinia, pilgrims from Assisi along the Way of Saint Francis, the "Bellunese Family" with the Erechim School in Brazil, and the motorcyclists gathered to show their support for peace and life. It is the first public appointment after a week of press conferences and audiences at the Vatican and precedes, on Monday 14 September, the Pope's 71st birthday, the visit to the Vatican Apostolic Library for the opening of the «AQVA» exhibition.

Angelus — Forgiveness "without measure"

Dear brothers and sisters, Happy Sunday! Today's Gospel speaks to us of forgiveness, which is a fundamental feature of the Christian life. Jesus taught and exemplified forgiveness even on the cross, where he prayed to the Father for his persecutors with the familiar words: "Forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" (Lk 23:34).
