On Tuesday, September 15, Pope Leo XIV has no public audiences or celebrations scheduled and continues his ordinary work of governing the Church at the offices of the Roman Curia, the day after his visit to the Vatican Apostolic Library for the inauguration of the "AQVA" exhibition and the day after his 71st birthday. In Rome, at the Pontifical Patristic Institute Augustinianum, a conference titled "The 21st Century: A New Age of Martyrs?" is held in two sessions, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM, promoted by the Commission for New Martyrs – Witnesses of the Faith of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints. After opening remarks by Msgr. Fabio Fabene, the morning session features Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, Archbishop of Kinshasa, historian Andrea Riccardi, and a roundtable with Sandra Sarti, Sr. Nicoletta Vittoria Spezzati, Lucia Capuzzi and Sr. Alice Drajea Jurugo; the afternoon session opens with Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, offering the Holy Land perspective, followed by Paolo Affatato on religious pluralism in Asia, Prof. Roberto Regoli on the offering of life and martyrdom in Europe, Prof. Gianni La Bella on the test of Covid and the Gospel, and Msgr. Marco Gnavi on the link between martyrdom and peace, with closing remarks by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints. Conference participants will be received in audience by Pope Leo XIV the following day, Wednesday September 16, before the General Audience.

The Pope accepts the resignation of H.E. Msgr. Francis I. Malone from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Shreveport (United States). He also appoints H.E. Msgr. Michael A. Saporito, transferring him from the titular see of Luperciana and from the office of Auxiliary of Newark, as the new Bishop of Metuchen (United States); born in 1962, ordained a priest in 1992, he held various pastoral roles in the Archdiocese of Newark before his episcopal appointment in 2020. He also appoints H.E. Msgr. Alfonso Raimo, transferring him from the titular see of Termini Imerese and from the office of Auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno, as the new Bishop of Terni-Narni-Amelia; born in 1959 in the province of Avellino, ordained a priest in 1990, he held pastoral and academic roles before his episcopal appointment in 2024.
