Wednesday General Audience
📍 St Peter's Square, Vatican City
Before around 25,000 people in a sunny St Peter's Square, Pope Leo XIV holds the Wednesday General Audience, continuing his cycle of catechesis on the documents of the Second Vatican Council with a reflection on the second chapter of the pastoral Constitution 'Gaudium et spes', devoted to the 'human community'. The Pope warns that technological development and social media risk making relationships 'less personal, more virtual', with the danger of growing used to delegating to algorithms decisions that belong only to human conscience, and calls 'certainly shameful' everything that is against life — murder, genocide, abortion, euthanasia and voluntary suicide. He recalls that personal and social development are interdependent and must not be set against each other, and that the common good requires evaluating social and political projects in the light of human dignity, social justice and free participation. After the catechesis in Italian come the summaries and greetings in the various languages, the appeals on current situations and the apostolic blessing for the faithful, pilgrims and groups present in the square; at the end of the audience the Pope also greets the Chaplains of Italian prisons, led by Inspector General Fr Raffaele Grimaldi, thanking them for their apostolate in places of human suffering and for their spiritual support to detainees who write to him about their wounds.

General Audience - The Documents of the Second Vatican Council. IV. Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et spes. 3. The human community (GS 23-32) (tradotto)

Brothers and sisters, good morning and welcome! Devoting its second chapter to the 'human community', the Constitution Gaudium et spes invites us to consider the 'increase in relations among men' as a crucial aspect of modern times. This reality needs, however, to find fulfilment 'more profoundly in the community of persons', requiring mutual respect for spiritual dignity.

Appointment of the new Bishop of Chioggia
📍 Vatican City
The Pope appoints as Bishop of Chioggia H.E. Mons. Michele Di Tolve, until now titular Bishop of Orrea and Auxiliary of Rome. Born in Milan on 19 May 1963 and ordained a priest in 1989, Mons. Di Tolve served in various pastoral roles in Milanese parishes and was rector of the Archiepiscopal Seminary of Milan from 2014 to 2020; elected Auxiliary Bishop of Rome on 26 May 2023, he received episcopal consecration on 2 September of that year, dealing in particular with the diaconate, clergy and religious life and directing the Pontifical Roman Major Seminary.
The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity and the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue jointly publish the Note 'A Journey of Hope. Sixty Years of Interreligious Dialogue and Fraternity in the Light of the Conciliar Declaration Nostra aetate', ahead of the sixtieth anniversary of the promulgation of the Conciliar Declaration Nostra aetate (28 October 1965) on the Church's relations with non-Christian religions. The document retraces the main stages of interreligious dialogue over the past sixty years, assesses its fruits and open challenges, and outlines some prospects for the future, recalling that the Church 'rejects nothing of what is true and holy' in other religious traditions.
