Assembly of the Diocese of Rome presided over by the Pope
📍 Basilica of St John Lateran, Rome
At 5:30 p.m., in the cathedral Basilica of St John Lateran, Pope Leo XIV presided over the Assembly of the Diocese of Rome that officially opens the new pastoral year. Introduced by Cardinal Vicar Baldassare Reina — who recalled that "Rome is not only the see of the Successor of Peter, but the particular Church of which the Pope is Bishop and Pastor" — the Assembly featured testimonies from a young woman, Maria, a Caritas volunteer, Sabrina, and a family, Dario and Roberta with their children. In his address, starting from Mary Magdalene's encounter with the Risen Lord at the empty tomb, the Pope proposed to the Diocese a "pastoral verification" built around four points of attention — encountering Christ, generating community, dwelling in and serving the city, forming the People of God — and announced that he had gladly approved the opening of the diocesan inquiry into the life, virtues and reputation for holiness of Fr Luigi Di Liegro, the historic founder of Rome's Caritas, who died in 1997. Delegations from the diocese's 334 parishes took part.

Address to the Diocesan Assembly of Rome (tradotto)

Dear brothers and sisters,
I would like to set out again with you from the morning of Easter, from a garden, from an empty tomb. Mary Magdalene is there, at dawn, while it is still dark, and the darkness she is in is not only that of the night not yet ended. It is the darkness of one who has lost someone, who seeks and does not find, who bends over and weeps. The Gospel,...

Audience with members of the Leo XIV International Study Center
📍 Consistory Hall, Vatican City
In the morning, in the Consistory Hall, Pope Leo XIV receives in audience about 50 members of the Leo XIV International Study Center, a research, formation and cultural-production body established in October 2025 within the Order of Saint Augustine and based in Florence. In his address the Pontiff stresses the importance of critical thinking in building a "civilization of love", to which the Church's social doctrine has much to offer, and calls on the Center to pursue a mission of hope: promoting formation for public and political life understood as a service to the common good, against every temptation to resignation.

Address to Participants in the Meeting promoted by the Leo XIV International Study Center

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Peace be with you!
Good morning everyone, and welcome! This is something of a family meeting.
Dear brothers and sisters,
I am happy to meet you and to accompany, in this way too, the first steps of the Augustinian Order’s initiative to promote an International Study Center bearing my name. I am particularly...

As part of their ad Limina Apostolorum visit (14-19 September), the Pope received in audience in the Apostolic Palace the Bishops of Uruguay, who in previous days had met with the various dicasteries of the Roman Curia. The bishops handed the Pontiff a two-volume document containing the voices of people from different parts of Uruguay, in preparation for the November apostolic journey. Cardinal Daniel Sturla and Bishop Milton Tróccoli discussed with the Pope the theme of secularism — stressing that "religion, by definition, is something public" —, the defence of life "from conception to natural death," the growing impact of drug trafficking in the region, and thanked Leo XIV for his work as a "messenger of peace." The meeting comes just weeks before Pope Leo XIV's apostolic journey to Uruguay, scheduled for 6-8 November in Florida, Paysandú and Montevideo, the first leg of his trip to Latin America.
