At noon on the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Pope appeared at the window of his study to recite the Angelus. Commenting on the Gospel of the great commandment (Mt 22:34-40), he explained that God seeks "a personal relationship" with us and that love cannot be lived "on command", but as a response to the love that always precedes us; quoting St Thérèse of the Child Jesus, he recalled that without love faith is emptied of its content and good works are reduced to moralism. After the Marian prayer he made a heartfelt appeal over the grave humanitarian situation in Yemen, especially in Taiz, assured his prayers for the victims of the terrorist attack against the faithful of St George's Orthodox church in Hamoud, Jordan, and invited all to unite spiritually "the day after tomorrow, 27 October" with the religious leaders gathering in Assisi for the 40th anniversary of the meeting convened by St John Paul II. That same day the International Meeting for Peace promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio opened in Bastia Umbra. On Sunday 25 October Card. Paolo Romeo, archbishop emeritus of Palermo, died aged 88: the Pope's telegram of condolence was published the following day.
