Audience with participants in the meeting “The Future of AI” promoted by the Pontifical Academy for Life
📍 Apostolic Palace, Consistory Hall
In the morning Leo XIV received in the Consistory Hall some twenty participants in the meeting “The Future of AI: A Dialogue Between the Vatican and the Scientific World on the Developments and Applications of Intelligent Technologies”, organized by the Pontifical Academy for Life and the Future of Life Institute at the Casina Pio IV. In his address, delivered in English, the Pope recalled Pope Francis' words to the G7 in 2024 (a machine must never be entrusted with the choice to take a human life) and his encyclical Magnifica humanitas, offering five considerations: the future of AI is not predetermined; machines are tools, not persons; certain decisions must never be delegated (with an appeal to the States meeting in Geneva in November to move towards a ban on lethal autonomous weapons); intelligent technologies must serve the common good; effective international institutions are needed to put ethical principles into practice.
