Friday 31 July 2026 — Signs the new Fundamental Law of the Vatican and receives Patti Smith
📜 Fundamental Law
Signing of the new Fundamental Law of the State of Vatican City
📍 Vatican City
On the liturgical memorial of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Pope Leo XIV signs the new Fundamental Law of the State of Vatican City, which enters into force immediately, fully replacing the one promulgated by Pope Francis on May 13, 2023: it is the fourth fundamental law of the Vatican State since 1929. The new text responds to the need to account for new governance requirements and significant regulatory changes that have occurred in recent years. Among the main innovations: the presidency of the Governorate is no longer reserved exclusively for Cardinals; the duties of the President are clarified — he ensures the governance of the State, issues the necessary directives for its general organization, coordinates the bodies of the Governorate, and may delegate functions to the Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General.

🤝 Private audience
Private audience with singer-songwriter Patti Smith
📍 Apostolic Palace, Vatican City
Pope Leo XIV grants a private audience to American singer-songwriter, poet and artist Patti Smith, accompanied by Fr. Antonio Spadaro S.J., with whom Smith shares a long friendship and cultural collaboration. Both originally from Chicago, the Pope and the "priestess of rock" — in Italy for her summer tour, following her concert at the Circus Maximus on July 27 — hold a long conversation touching on memories, music, hopes and reflections on the contemporary world, including themes of peace, rights and social justice. A video released by the Vatican shows Smith greeting the Pontiff with a smile; the Pope jokingly asks her "You speak English too, don't you?", prompting laughter. The meeting recalls the artist's previous collaboration with the Holy See: on May 8, on the first anniversary of Leo XIV's election, Smith inaugurated the Holy See Pavilion at the 61st Venice Art Biennale with a "sound prayer" created with the Soundwalk Collective.
