Video message for the 1st West Africa Youth Day
📍 Vatican City · Accra (Ghana)
The Bulletin of the Holy See Press Office publishes the video message that Pope Leo XIV addresses to the participants in the first West Africa Youth Day, taking place in Accra, Ghana, from 7 to 12 September 2026 on the theme "Take courage: young Catholics, agents and promoters of peace and hope in West Africa" (cf. Jn 16:33). The gathering is promoted by the Regional Episcopal Conference of West Africa (RECOWA-CERAO). In the message, delivered in English and French, the Pope encourages young people to "move forward without losing hope" at a time marked by crises, doubt and insecurity: "you are not a sacrificed youth as many may think. In the Church-Family of God, you are God's today, the Church's today!". He invites them to "walk together" so that "no one is marginalized, isolated, excluded or rejected" and to be "builders of bridges between peoples, cultures and religions", following the example of Jesus "who excluded no one from his journey". He then offers a warning about the use of time: "Do not sacrifice your precious youth on the altar of fictitious pleasures and superficiality", recalling that "our deepest questions find neither a hearing nor an answer in the endless scrolling on our mobile phone". Finally, he entrusts the young people to Mary, Queen of Peace, invoking the integral human development of their nations.
Dear young people, chers jeunes, Peace be with you! La paix soit avec vous! I am happy to join you on this joyful occasion of the first West Africa Youth Day. I am pleased by this beautiful initiative of the Episcopal Conferences of your countries, which have placed young people at the heart of their pastoral priorities.
I am convinced that these powerful moments spent together will help you to grow in faith and become ever more deeply enriched by values such as encounter and openness to others.
At a time when so many crises seem to darken your horizon, I wish to encourage you to move forward without losing hope. I know how the weight of doubt, uncertainty and, at times, insecurity can weigh heavily on your shoulders and unsettle your plans for the future.
One of the challenges you face is that of walking together to help bring about positive change in your societies. Walking together means ensuring that no one is marginalized, isolated, excluded or rejected. Be builders of bridges between peoples, cultures and religions. We must commit ourselves to living as Jesus, our Master and Lord, lived, who excluded no one from his journey. He recognized the presence of God in those who lived on the margins of society, even in those who did not belong to his own people.
I entrust you to the Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, thinking especially of those countries of yours that, at times, face complex crises. May she intercede with her Son, Jesus Christ, for the integral human development of your dear nations. Upon you, the clergy and all those who work with young people, I invoke an abundance of divine graces.
Et maintenant je vous donne de tout mon cœur la Bénédiction:
May the Lord keep you always in his love. The Lord be with you. May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
On the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the day after the Holy Mass celebrated in Genazzano at the Shrine of the Mother of Good Counsel, Pope Leo XIV has no public audiences or official liturgical celebrations on his calendar. The schedule of celebrations presided over by the Holy Father for September and October 2026, released by the Office of the Papal Liturgical Celebrations, lists no engagements for Tuesday. The Pope continues his ordinary work of governing the Church in the offices of the Roman Curia, with the customary private audiences for bishops and heads of Dicasteries. The next public appointment on the agenda is the General Audience on Wednesday 9 September in St Peter's Square.

The principal consecrator was Joseph Li Shan, Archbishop of Beijing, with six co-consecrators; some 350 priests, religious, seminarians and faithful took part in the celebration.
