Audience with participants in the 'September Courses' for newly appointed bishops
📍 Synod Hall, Vatican City
In the morning Pope Leo XIV receives in audience the roughly 147 recently appointed bishops who took part in the 'September Courses', the annual formation meetings promoted by the Dicastery for Evangelization and the Dicastery for Bishops, held in Rome from 2 to 10 September 2026 on the theme 'Servants of communion in the Church'. Forty-nine prelates were enrolled in the Dicastery for Evangelization course and ninety-eight in that of the Dicastery for Bishops, coming from all five continents: among the countries represented are Algeria, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Colombia, Congo, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, the Philippines, Ghana, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Myanmar, Namibia, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Zimbabwe, Kyrgyzstan and Thailand. In the preceding days the new bishops took part in common sessions at the Pontifical Urbaniana University and specialized sessions at the Pontifical Missionary College 'St Peter the Apostle', with workshops on the abuse crisis and the protection of minors, on liturgy, on mission and on pastoral care. On the morning of 10 September the participants celebrate Holy Mass in St Peter's Basilica, with the veneration of the relics of the Apostle, presided over by Cardinal Archpriest Mauro Gambetti, before the audience with the Holy Father, the culminating moment of the programme. It has been a fixed September appointment since 2000, the year of the first edition wanted by St John Paul II. Opening the meeting in the Synod Hall, the Pope invites those present to pray for the recently deceased father of Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization. In his address he assures that «no Bishop walks alone» and sets out four tasks for the prelates: to «remain with Jesus», to have «the heart of Jesus the Good Shepherd» by loving people and learning their names, to live pastoral solicitude as an «episcopal fatherhood» with «a large soul, large enough to make room for everyone», and to keep «a missionary heart» open also to Christians of other confessions and believers of other religions. Looking to this age of «rapid changes» and the development of artificial intelligence, he points to the Encyclical «Magnifica humanitas» as a «vision and method» for «safeguarding the human», and recommends special care for elderly and sick priests.
