⛵ Feast of the Madonna del Lago
Holy Mass and procession at the Church of Maria Santissima del Lago
📍 Church of Maria Santissima del Lago, Castel Gandolfo
Pope Leo XIV presided over Holy Mass in the small church of Maria Santissima del Lago, on Lake Albano at Castel Gandolfo, for the traditional feast of the Madonna del Lago, celebrated every year on the last weekend of August. Before some 350 faithful, from the altar of the church consecrated by Saint Paul VI on 15 August 1977, the Pope recalled his predecessors Paul VI and John Paul II and urged all to walk “the way of life”, the way of love: “hatred and violence bring nothing good, but only destruction and death, always, even when they are a response to injustices suffered”. The Mass was concelebrated by the Bishop of Albano Vincenzo Viva, the parish priest of San Tommaso da Villanova, Fr. Tadeusz Rozmus, and representatives of the Salesians, in the year marking the centenary of their presence at Castel Gandolfo (1926). Afterwards, the Pontiff and the faithful carried the statue of the Madonna del Lago in procession, first through the streets to the Tropicana lido, then — past the beach — onto the water: for the first time in history a Pope took part in the procession by boat as well, boarding the vessel “Falco” of the Castel Gandolfo Lakeside Association, decorated with yellow and white flowers, together with the statue of the Virgin. The roughly 25-minute crossing to Giorgio’s Beach, at the foot of the Apostolic Palace, was accompanied by about a dozen civilian craft, canoes and dragon boats and by several police vessels. On the beach, as the tenor Aurelio Grimaldi and the soprano Elena Kovalova, accompanied on the piano by maestro Massimiliano Franchina, performed “La Vergine degli angeli” from Verdi’s La forza del destino and Franck’s Panis Angelicus, the Pope stepped off the boat to applause and recited a supplication to Our Lady: “look with kindness on your children wounded by war and encourage in everyone the desire for peace… Where hatred grows, teach us forgiveness; where fear prevails, restore hope”. It is the Pontiff’s last public engagement tied to the summer calendar published by the Press Office on 30 July. The event was broadcast live by Vatican Media, Telepace and TV2000.

📜 Speech text
Homily at the Holy Mass and Procession of the Madonna del Lago (Castel Gandolfo) (translated)

Dear brothers and sisters, I am glad to celebrate with you the Feast of the Madonna del Lago, as some of my Predecessors have done in the past: Saint Paul VI, who desired and supported the building of this church dedicated to Mary and consecrated it, and Saint John Paul II, who wished here to recall its memory and renew its message.

📋 Daily schedule
In the morning, before devoting himself to the evening celebration at the Church of Maria Santissima del Lago, Pope Leo XIV receives in audience Archbishop Giordano Piccinotti, S.D.B., titular archbishop of Gradisca and president of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See; Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals; Archbishop Giuseppe Andrea Salvatore Baturi, archbishop of Cagliari and secretary general of the Italian Episcopal Conference; and Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education.

The Press Office bulletin announces the appointment of Archbishop Lizardo Estrada Herrera, O.S.A., as coadjutor archbishop of the metropolitan archdiocese of Cuzco, in Peru. An Augustinian, until now auxiliary bishop of the same archdiocese and titular of Ausuccura, Archbishop Estrada Herrera was born in 1973 in the province of Cotabambas, professed solemn vows in the Order of Saint Augustine in 2001 and was ordained a priest in 2005. He holds a licentiate in Moral Theology from the Alphonsian Academy in Rome and a doctorate in Pastoral Theology from Medellín; since 2023 he has been secretary general of the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (CELAM). The appointment as coadjutor gives him the right of succession to the leadership of the Andean archdiocese, in a region of Peru dear to Pope Leo XIV because of his long years of mission in the country.
With the Apostolic Letter issued Motu Proprio "Mutua Concordia", published on 29 August and effective upon its publication in L'Osservatore Romano, Pope Leo XIV amends canons 106 and 126 of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches in order to strengthen communion between the Patriarch — "Pater et Caput" — and the Synod of Bishops of the Eastern Catholic patriarchal and major archiepiscopal Churches. The new paragraph of canon 106 governs cases in which the Patriarch fails to convene the Synod, assigning to the bishop most senior by episcopal ordination the power to convene it, so as to avoid the paralysis of the governing body. Canon 126, extensively revised, introduces for the first time an orderly procedure for the removal of the Patriarch for grave cause: if, when asked by the Synod, he refuses to resign, the bishop most senior by ordination presides over the election of a new president and submits the removal to a secret ballot requiring at least two thirds of the votes; the Patriarch is guaranteed the full right of defence before the assembly, and the final decision to declare the see vacant is subject to the assent of the Roman Pontiff, which — the Pope explains — safeguards "the full freedom of the Fathers in expressing their choice, protected from any possible undue internal or external pressure". The reform draws on the practice and theological sensibility of the Orthodox Churches regarding synodality.

Pope’s financial aid for the flood in Nepal
📍 Kathmandu, Nepal / Città del Vaticano
After the telegram of condolence sent on 27 August for the flood that on 26 August devastated a vast region of Nepal near Tibet, Pope Leo XIV sends — through the Dicastery for the Service of Charity and in agreement with the Apostolic Nunciature — financial support for the most urgent needs of the population. The contribution, “a first aid” intended for primary emergencies, supports Caritas Nepal, which under the direction of the Apostolic Vicariate distributes food, basic necessities and shelter for those who have lost everything. This was announced by the prefect of the Dicastery, Archbishop Luis Marín de San Martín, who spoke of “a swift and concrete sign” of the Pope’s closeness to the most vulnerable, “like a caress from the Church”. The provisional toll of the disaster speaks of more than 630 dead and nearly 3,000 missing; the Italian Bishops’ Conference has also allocated 500,000 euros from its 8xmille funds for Nepal, Colombia, Peru and Indonesia.
