Audience with the Assembly of the Federation of Capuchin Poor Clare Nuns of Italy
📍 Consistory Hall, Apostolic Palace, Vatican
On the feast of St. Matthew, apostle and evangelist, Pope Leo XIV receives in audience the participants in the Assembly of the Federation of Capuchin Poor Clare Nuns of Italy. Drawing on St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians on faithfulness to one's vocation, the Pontiff praises the Federation's work of revising its Constitutions and recalls, quoting St. Clare, that "the first and principal task of all religious is contemplation of divine realities and constant union with God in prayer." On the decline in vocations, he invites a change of perspective: numerical difficulties "can help us discover or rediscover unexpected potential, not so much in terms of numerical strength but of the quality of the proposal," and stresses that "vocations are not born from the application of organizational strategies, nor from campaigns devised at a desk, but from prayer, familiarity with the Gospel, silence." He insists on the importance of formation, of an enclosure lived "in a spirit of deep communion," and of silence as prophetic witness in history. Finally, he indicates four tools for responding to today's questions of meaning — mutual listening, communion of intent, mutual service and evangelical witness — and concludes by thanking the sisters for being "torches, sentinels for the Church and for the world," before imparting the apostolic blessing, invoking the intercession of Mary, St. Francis, St. Clare and Blessed Maria Lorenza Longo.
